Shetland Sheepdogs are natural herders. They were bred as farm dogs with a broad variety of duties, including herding sheep, goats, ducks and geese.
We've all heard the old expression, "It's like herding cats" meaning it's difficult. Some Shelties in our club actually do this. They will herd the family kitty off the kitchen counter or back inside, where they're supposed to be. It's second-nature to them. Though to compete, training is essential. Our club can guide you to training a Sheltie to herd.
In AKC Herding field trials, Shelties are judged on test level, course type, and livestock type. They're measured as to their versatility, control, and movement of stock in an extended area, or tending to the flock in an unfenced area such as a road or in grazing flock management. Throughout all field trials the teamwork between handler/shepherd and dog is essential.
